Jozani Forest, Zanzibar

A nice wildlife safari you can do on Zanzibar is to Jozani Forest Conservation Area to see the Zanzibar Red Colobus monkeys. These monkeys are endemic to Zanzibar island (Unguja), but a small population has been translocated to Pemba Island, They are highly endangered, numbering around 1,500.They are very attractive monkeys, being red, black and white, with individuals being easily recognisable. The long, limp white 'crown' on their heads is characteristic. Zanzibar Red Colobus monkey, apparently sucking the thumb it doesn't have.

They live in various relict forest areas on Unguja, but a special area for them has been set aside at Jozani Forest, a remnant of the indigenous forest which once covered the island.
Zanzibar Red Colobus monkeyThe Zanzibar Red Colobus Monkeys are highly social, and live in groups. Some of these groups have been habituated to humans, and at Jozani forest, a guide will accompany you to see one of the groups. You can stay for as long as the monkeys like. The monkeys go on with their lives and you can photograph, draw or watch them. Zanzibar Red Colobus Monkey dozing on a branch.

Leopard once lived in the forest, but a 'bounty' system throughout Zanzibar may have extirpated the island sub-species - it is at best highly endangered. However, the monkeys share at least one habit in common with leopards!
