Samburu babyThis baby slept all the time we were talking to the guide in his hut, so that (as it was dark - this photo is lit by the tiny on-camera flash) I didn't even notice he was there until the guide pointed him out.The baby is lying on animal skins, over a 'mattress' of fresh leleshwa branches laid on the plain earth floor. These aromatic leaves are also used as deodorant, and are very bouncy - surprisingly comfortable. They are said to repel insects and rodents, and certainly we saw no evidence of these in the village. The adults use neckrests in place of pillows: we were assured that they are comfortable, being individually carved and modified to suit each individual's neck curves. |
