Northern White-crowned Shrike - 19Kb

Northern White-crowned Shrike

Eurocephalus ruepelli

This bird is common and widepread through almost all of Kenya and northern Tanzania.
Since it perches conspicuously on open branches watching the ground for prey species (anthropods), it is easily seen in most of the main game reserves and national parks, particuarly Samburu/Buffalo Springs/Shaba.
This photo was taken in Tarangire NP in northern Tanzania.

White-crowned Shrike - 26Kb

As well as being common, adults of this species are easy to identify because of their shining white 'cap'.
Young birds, however, have brown crowns, dark faces and pale bills, and then a longer glance is needed to separate it from the smaller Black-headed Sparrow-weavers.
