Pied Kingfisher

Ceryle rudis rudis

These Pied Kingfishers were part of a group photographed from a boat on Lake Naivasha: the light was just as you see it here!
Pied Kingfishers are often seen over open water, and hunt mainly on fish, either from perches or, conspicuously, by hovering. Then they take off from a perch, they have a distinctive 'mechanical' call, which often alerts you to their presence.
