This young girl was using a calabash to churn butter. Everything the Himba girls and women wear is symbolic, including the jewellery. The two plaited strands at the front of the girl's head show that her parents are both alive, and two plaits at the back of the head indicate living grandparents. Details of her jewellery and attire show whether she has reached puberty and whether she has been chosen to be married. At the time we visited, this girl had been chosen to be married, and was due to be be married (as a second wife) when she reached puberty, probably in the following year. |
