Fernandina

The nominate Fernandina race of Marine Iguana (Amblyrhynchus cristatus cristatus) is one of the largest sub-species. Males can grow up to 1.5m.
This is because of the colder water around the island.

This race is also the least coloured of the seven subspecies, making them difficult to photograph against similarly coloured lava. The green background here helps a bit!

Marine Iguanas use their long toes and sharp claws to grip onto rocks underwater - or in the inter-tidal zone - when they're feeding on algae.

Near the end of the promontary is a narrow isthmus where Galápagos Sealions Zalophus wollebacki constantly cross from one side to the other, or just lie out on the rocks. We also saw swimming Marine Iguanas coming in to land here.
